Lovely UKLJers. I'm in need of your help once again.

Do you remember the high winds at the beginning of October? We do. They caused half a tree to flatten our car.

Well, now after you've all stopped laughing I have a question. The trees opposite our house are very overgrown and it is the Council's responsibiliy to maintain the pruning of such trees. A few of the residents had already complained to the council about how dangerous these trees look when the wind is in full force. Our insurance is being sorted out but do you think I can make a claim to the Council as well? Does anyone have any advice/experience of a similar thing happening to them? The only thing I've ever claimed for is a video in 1988 when I was burgled so have limited experience myself.

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Gratefully yours

Chris

a while back i was reading a post on favourite quotes, and for some reason i remember reading someone say their favourite cassie quote was something like "do you think we miss the things we love, or love the things we'll miss." i loved it however i don't remember hearing it and i can't seem to find that post anymore. can anyone tell me if she (or someone else, maybe i'm confused on character) actually did say this or something similar to it, and which episode it was from? i'd really appreciate some confirmation because i've been thinking about using it for a school project.

thanks. :)

I had to make a video with the new clips that came out recently. I also made a couple of wallpapers a while ago and thought I'd include them in the post in case you want to check them out.

Daisy - Skins Cast Music Video (Seasons 3 and 4)
Characters: Whole cast from Seasons 3 and 4 from Skins.
Music: "Daisy" by Brand New.
Episodes: Season 3 and Season 4. Many spoilers for both seasons.
Description: Music video about the Season 3 and Season 4 cast. Based on the Season 4 clips, with clips from Season 3.

Well if we take all these things
and we bury them fast
And we'll pray that they turn into seeds,
to roots and then grass
It'd be all right, it's all right,
it'd be easier that way.

Is anyone watching "Contact" with Jodie Foster on five right now?

Did anyone watch the scene where she kissed this guy earlier onand think "Er, Jodie's a lesbian"?

Or was I dreaming a few months back when Jodie Foster came out?

My previous thread got so big that I thought I should post a separate thank you to everyone who gave me advice. The incident happened on Friday afternoon, and I was planning on talking to my line manager, and the director of equality at the college to see how to tackle the issue.

I don't think I should be telling the students what to think (people should be free to think what they want) but OFSTED guidelines dictate that tutors must actively promote equality and tackle discrimination.

For those of you who are concerned about this for various reasons, I will keep LJ-UK updated on what the official policy towards this situation is.

I was watching a program with my students today when a bisexual man came onto the screen and immediately one of my students shouted out that he should be killed. All the students agreed, and it was not a joking agreement, it was a dead cold agreement. I stopped the program and asked them why, and all 18 Muslim students said it was what God wanted because it was not natural because animals do not display homosexual behaviour. I showed them proof that animals do display homosexual behaviour and it therefore it is totally natural. One student said that just because animals do it, it does not make it natural. I asked him to explain when people engage in homosexual activity they are being possessed by Jin (the supernatural) and therefore they must be killed so as to kill the Jinn at the same time. Another student said that Muslims believe that all animals have souls and pray to god, and the animals displaying homosexual behaviour must be the ones that pray to the devil! When I asked them were they got these views from they all said their parents, the mosque and the Quran. I tried to say that this homosexual was not a Muslim and surely he should be free to follow his own sexuality, and they responded that because God can see what he was doing he should still be killed! One then added that just because scientists say it’s happening in nature it doesn’t mean that it is, and that God trumps science anyhow. So I asked him that if his child was dying of diabetes and he had the choice to give him insulin or prayer but not both what would he choose. He said the prayer every time. So I told him that parents in America had done just that and their children had died. His response was, “at least they’ve got God on their side”!

Now the problem is that I’ve been told by my college to tackle discrimination, promote equality, and respect students beliefs and cultures. But how can I do that when the students’ beliefs and cultures seem to be promoting the very discrimination I’m supposed to be challenging? These are 16-19 year old male students who are displaying extreme bigotry and hatred towards other human beings just for having a different sexual persuasion.

As a side note the only two students who did not care about the homosexual said they also did not believe in god.

The gang are back after the summer break, in a seemingly protective bubble of hedonism: there are no consequences, no tomorrow and everyone will live forever. Then Thomas (Merveille Lukeba) experiences a life-changing event, causing him to question everything: his faith, his family and even his choice of friends. The reverberations will reach far beyond Thomas’s story, affecting the lives of all those around him.

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.
